Language Objective
Students will be able to correctly identify(both orally and written) the definitions of the given vocabulary words: head, antenna, thorax, legs, abdomen, hind wings, fore wings, and cocoon or chrysalis.
Key Vocabulary
Abdomen
Antenna
Fore wings
Head
Hind wings
Legs
Thorax
Cocoon
Chrysalis
Building Background/ Motivation
Get the children out of their seats and sing the song, head shoulders knees and toes, doing the motions to go along with the song. Tell them that butteflies have body parts just like us and we are going to learn about butterfly body parts today!
Procedures
1. Explain to the students that today we will be learning about the different parts of a butterfly and where they are located on the butterfly. The objective will be clearly stated and will be written on the board for students to refer back to.
2. Pull up a picture of a butterfly from below this lesson (on the smart board) then go over the different body parts such as head, antenna, legs, abdomen, hind wing, fore wing, and cocoon or chrysalis. Students should be familiar with some words related to the butterfly like, cocoon, tell them chrysalis is just another word for cocoon. The definitions of the words are: (Simplify as needed for the students.)
Abdomen - The abdomen is the segmented tail area of an insect that contains the heart.
Antenna - An antenna is how the butterfly senses things and balance.
Fore wings - The fore wings are the two upper wings.
Head - The head is the part of the insect that contains the brain.
Hind wings - The hind wings are the two lower wings.
Legs - All adult butterflies have six legs.
Thorax - The thorax is the body section between the head and the abdomen.
*Have the students complete a butterfly body worksheet, labeling the boy parts of the butterfly.*
3. Before giving the students the definition ask them to write what they think the meaning of the word might be such as: cocoon. Students must get at least one part of their statement about what they believe about a cocoon, from prior knowledge/what they already know and learned up to this point. Then, proceed to tell the definition of cocoon. Have them write and say the actual definition and have students determine what they were correct and incorrect about.
Assessment of Learning Outcomes/Objectives
Students will take a quiz on the definitions of the body parts of the butterfly, where they will match the word to the definition with at least 80% accuracy.
Closure
Sing: The Butterfly Song (to the tune of "Up on the Housetop")
First comes a butterfly and lays an egg,
Out comes a caterpillar with many legs,
Oh see the caterpillar spin and spin,
A little chrysalis to sleep in. Oh, oh ,oh wait and see
oh oh oh wait and see
Out of the chrysalis, my oh my
out comes a pretty butterfly!

Give the ELL’s the words and definitions in both English and their native Language. Let them label their butterfly with their native language first, then in English.
Give them their quiz the same way, with both languages on it.
Give them extra time since they have to write both languages on their label worksheet.
Pre-teach Vocabulary.
Give oral and written directions on the quiz.
Accommodations and Modifications for ESE
Give them very short and simple definitions for the words. Also, modify their quiz.
Give them extended time.
Allow them preferential seating and atmosphere.
Possible Connections to Other Content Areas
Science: Filling out the anatomy of a butterfly worksheet.
Music: Singing The Butterfly Song.
