Abstract of Unit/Parent Letter
Attention Parents:
This week we will be doing a SIOP unit based upon the life cycle of a butterfly. This unit was made specifically for your first grade child. The SIOP model is designed to help English Language Learners get the most out of classroom activities and lessons. SIOP stands for sheltered instruction observation protocol. The SIOP model is composed of lesson preparation, building background comprehensible input, strategies, interaction, practice/application, lesson delivery, and review/assessment. We have five lesson plans that consist of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, and visual arts. Throughout this unit students will gain an understanding of how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly through its life cycle also known as metamorphosis. Students will be able to identify characteristics of a butterfly, and distinguish between different types of butterflies by their length and weight. Furthermore, students will acknowledge that like humans, butterflies also have basic things they need to survive. Your child will create butterfly artwork, learn through cooperative learning, and participate in other fun, engaging activites. Students will understand the meaning of new vocabulary words associated with butterflies. They will also demonstrate respect for their fellow classmates and the butterflies. Students will be actively engaged in real life experiences to help make learning fun and exciting! Please feel free to contact us or to come in to volunteer and help out at any point during this unit. As you know, we always have an open door policy and we love having parents come in to take part in their child's learning. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions and please come in if you wish to help out or take part in our unit as we explore the beauty and wonder of butterflies!
