Shapes, Sizes, and Patterns...Oh My!
Lesson 4
Shapes, Sizes and Patterns...Oh My!
Subject
Math
Materials
Smart board, scale and measuring sticks, butterfly cut outs of actual sized butterflies.
Sunshine State Standard(s)
M.A.1.G.5.2: Compare and order objects according to descriptors of length, weight and capacity.
Content Objective
After weighing and measuring the butterflies, students will complete a quiz where they will compare the different butterflies using their charts with 85 % accuracy.
Language Objective
Students will discuss with their shoulder partner their findings of the weight and measurements of the butterflies. They can compare and contrast the similarities and differences they each found.
Key Vocabulary
Weight
Measurement
Scale
Measuring Tape
Ruler
Building Background/ Motivation
Ask students if they know how to use a scale or measuring tape? Give them a quick lesson on it. Show them by using the scale and measuring stick to measure and weigh something like a pencil, under the smart board projector so the whole class can see you do it on the smart board, or have students come up and help.

Procedures
1. Explain to students that today we will be weighing and measuring different objects as well as butterflies. Students will also be recording their findings and then later discussing those findings with their shoulder partner. The objective will be clearly stated and on the board for students to refer back to. Key vocabulary will be written on the board and as we use each, they will be gone over.
2. Put students into groups of fours. Give each group of students a scale and measuring stick and a few classroom objects (stapler, pen, paper etc.) that the students can weigh and measure. Have them measure, weigh and note at least two of the objects they do this with. Walk around to make sure the students understand how to measure and weigh the objects correctly.
3. Give each group of students the butterfly picture cutouts (these cardboard butterflies depict the real weight and length of these actual kinds of butterflies, be sure to tell this to students. I added things to the butterfly cardboard cutouts to make them weigh differently so the students can note the differences. The pictures of the butterflies are the same ones the students learned about earlier in this unit.) Have the students use their measuring sticks and scales to work together to find the length and weight of each of the different kinds of cardboard cutout butterflies. As they do this every group member has a chart that they will all fill in depicting the length and weight of each butterfly.
4. Once all groups have filled in their charts, the students will discuss their findings with their shoulder partner.
Assessment of Learning Outcomes/Objectives
After measuring and weighing the butterfly cut-outs, students will use their information charts they filled out to discuss their findings with their shoulder partner, portraying their knowledge of the butterfly. Teacher will walk around informally assessing students' performance for this activity.
Closure
Show them a PBS video from Sid the Science kid on measuring
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hlkRcTmFxY
Next, do the activity where you measure the students, using non standardized measuring (using something other than a ruler.) They can see that tools such as measuring tape can also be used for larger and longer things.
Accommodations and Modifications for ELLs
Model how activities and assignments will go.
Repeat and review content and directions
Highlight key words
Accommodations and Modifications for ESE
Present instructions/ directions orally
Allow breaks if needed
Possible Connections to Other Content Areas
Music: Sing a measurement song.
